Box Office Report
Remember when we all thought this year’s summer movie season would be perfect for a record setting box office? Well we’re half way through June and so far it is not looking hot at all. Sure ‘Endgame’ broke every record in the books, and John Wick did okay, but as we look at this past weekend’s box office, I’m getting worried. ‘Men In Black: International’ came in at the top spot, but with only $28.5 million, a franchise low by quite a bit. In 2nd this week we have ‘Secret Life Of Pets 2’, which is also underperforming at the box office. 3rd this week was ‘Aladdin’, which is actually proving to be quite lengthy, already well above $700 million worldwide. In 4th came ‘Dark Phoenix’ which is reinventing the phrase “box office bomb” here in the states, with an abysmal $9 million 2nd weekend. Rounding off the top 5 we have the Elton John biopic, ‘Rocketman’ which is turning out to be a moderate success.
As we go further down the list we see summer blockbusters disappointing all over the place, with ‘Shaft’ not even managing to get in the top 5. ‘Godzilla: King Of Monsters’ is also doing quite poorly. So how can this summer’s box office get back on track? Well, we have ‘Lion King’ in about a month, but it all starts this weekend with a little movie called ‘Toy Story 4’. Come on Pixar, you’re our only hope.
