Gotham: A Preview of Season 4
Season 4 of Gotham will be premiering on Fox on September 21 with the subtitle “Dawn of Night”.
From what we’re hearing, we’re in store for some exciting developments in the series focusing on Jim Gordon and the development of Batman’s extensive rogues gallery.
One development from the season 3 finale that I find very exciting is the revelation that Butch’s real name is in fact Cyrus Gold, also known, of course, as Solomon Grundy. The last time we saw Butch, he was dead in the morgue after being shot by Barbara Kean and we were discovering his true identity. He will in fact turn into Solomon Grundy during this upcoming season. Fans of DC comics love the zombie who enjoys beating up on Batman.
With Grundy comes a new team-up of sorts. Edward Nygma, aka The Riddler, will be teaming up with the newly formed zombie. Their exact objective is unclear, but it surely involves terrorizing the city of Gotham.
Another major villain about to be set loose on Gotham is Scarecrow. We’ve seen him as his alter-ego Jonathan Crane, but he’ll officially adopt the Scarecrow moniker this season and we’ll see his full costume for the first time as he terrorizes the population with his fear toxin, which warps an individual’s mind to think they’re experiencing their worst fear. Jim Gordon and Penguin will both set out to stop Scarecrow on their own, inevitably bringing them into conflict with each other.
Two additional villains, Toymaker and Professor Pyg, will make their Gotham debuts. We’ll also see more of recurring antagonists Poison Ivy, Victor Zsasz and Carmine Falcone. Oh, and did I mention that Ra’s al Ghul is coming?
Another partnership to watch is that of Selina, Tabitha, and Barbara. Tabitha and Barbara form a sort of family unit with Selina as they become her mentors. Will Selina become Catwoman? Will Tabitha become Tigress?
Here’s what Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle) told Fansided:
“Yeah, Tabitha is mentoring and then finds out that Barbara is still alive. She’s initially furious, but I think the plan is to have them come back together. I think that will be such an interesting relationship and dynamic to explore. I think Barbara is a bit more maternal and loving in the way that she teaches Selina. Tabitha is a bit more tough love.”
This is of course a spoiler that Barbara did not actually die when she was electrocuted, but that’s been a poorly kept secret anyway.
In last season’s finale, we finally saw Bruce on the rooftop, as Batman has been seen so many times before. Actor David Mazouz and producers have confirmed he will continue his growth into the hero role this season, and becomes more of a real threat to the villains of Gotham. Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock will still be the front lines of defense, but they may be getting some much-needed assistance.
Don’t expect the Batsuit, however. The producers have to save something for season 5.
This has the potential to be the best season of Gotham yet.
