Hasbro Acquires the Power Rangers

Updated: Jun 13, 2018

Hasbro purchased a number of properties from Haim Saban for $522 million. Most notably among those properties was the Power Rangers.

While the toys and TV series (now on for over two decades) are a big part of the deal, an important factor were the movie rights.

Paramaount and Hasbro are in the early stages of building a Hasbro cinematic universe, led by Transformers and G.I. Joe. A Micronauts movie was recently announced as a part of this universe as well. While a couple smaller properties have seen their films cancelled this year, adding the Power Rangers to the mix is a huge shot in the arm.

Hasbro wants to take advantage of the current superhero fever, and though the Transformers have led their own successful film franchise, the Power Rangers are a fresh, popular brand moving forward.

A cinematic universe featuring the Transformers, G.I. Joe, the Micronauts and now the Power Rangers definitely has potential if done right.

So does this mean we will get a sequel to the Power Rangers movie from 2017? I’d say it’s unlikely. That movie was a box office disappointment and failed to generate much excitement, so Paramount will want to start over. More likely is that the Power Rangers receive a reboot when they’re eventually inserted on screen alongside the Transformers.
