Kamala Khan is Coming to the MCU

Updated: Jul 7, 2018

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently confirmed that Kamala Khan will be joining the MCU. Khan is a Muslim American shape-shifter who became Ms. Marvel when her idol, Carol Danvers, left the title behind and became Captain Marvel.

Her introduction is already in the works and more will be revealed after Captain Marvel is officially released next year.

She’s a pretty interesting character. A Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey, she’s a huge superhero fan and actually writes Avengers fan fiction. During the “Inhumanity” storyline, the Terrigen Mists are released, cauing those with Inhuman genes to discover their powers. This is when she discovers her shape-shifting powers and Wolverine-like healing factor.

She didn’t debut in the comics until 2013, but there are similarities to Peter Parker. She’s a teenager who has to learn how to become a hero in the midst of dealing with friends and school. And though her religion of Islam isn’t a focal point of her story, Islam and the stereotypes that come with it do play a part.

With Khan, Muslims will finally be represented in the MCU. It will be interesting to see how Marvel handles her origin. In the comics, she was an Inhuman. But the Inhumans haven’t had the best success in the MCU as the movie never materialized and the series was cancelled after just one season of disappointing ratings and reviews.

Some people expect Marvel to reboot the Inhumans within the MCU, but I think they’ll change her origin as they’re prone to do. Scientific experiment? Could they make her a mutant once the X-Men join the MCU? Or maybe she’ll have an accident similar to that of her idol.
