Lando Returning for Star Wars Episode IX
Star Wars fans, Lando Calrissian is returning. Billy Dee Williams will be reprising the role in Episode IX.
We haven’t seen Williams in the role since the original Star Wars trilogy, specifically The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Donald Glover did play a younger Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story this year.
Lando will join Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO as returning characters from the original trilogy. Lando is obviously the only character that will have visibly aged.
What does this mean for the franchise? Well, there aren’t many original characters left to come back after the deaths of Han Solo in The Force Awakens and Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi, and the real life death of Carrie Fisher. So if you want to bring back a blast from the past, Lando is an option. One of the only options. And younger, newer Star Wars fans got a glimpse of the character, albeit younger, in Solo, so they’ll recognize him more now than they would have otherwise. The timing is right.
Speaking of timing, does this mean Lando’s demise is imminent? Probably. Star Wars has taken to killing off major characters in its recent installments and if that pattern continues, it’s likely to be Lando who bites the dust. They’re wiping out the old guard pretty swiftly.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get excited to see him in Episode IX! Whether he lives or dies, his return should be awesome.
