Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan?

Let’s talk about that Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan rumor that has popped up.

For perspective, this is a rumor that originated in March when David Goyer was leading Green Lantern Corps. Cruise is one of many names rumored to be in the running for the role for quite some time now. Now the latest is that he’s the frontrunner for the role.

According to the rumor, Cruise is the preferred choice. However, Hal Jordan dies in the current script and Cruise will not accept the role unless it’s rewritten for the character to survive.

While Cruise may very well have been the frontrunner back in March, the project has changed since then. Goyer is no longer at the helm; Geoff Johns is currently writing the screenplay. As far as we know, no script currently exists that involves Jordan dying. Whatever talks may have taken place between Goyer and Cruise have likely been abandoned.

If WB was truly on the cusp of locking down Cruise, they would have made sure to get it done in time to announce at last month’s San Diego Comic Con. That it didn’t happen is a sign that they are not close to casting the role just yet.

But for discussion, let’s just assume the rumor is indeed true. I’m not much of a Tom Cruise fan and his casting would cause mixed reactions among fans, but one thing I’ll give him is that he does look the part. His casting would also signal that this is going to be a high-octane space action adventure. It would also mean that WB is seeking a box office draw above all else and Cruise is one of the most bankable action stars in Hollywood today. He would be a major “get” for the DCEU, and since you wouldn’t be killing him off, he’s the kind of star that would be the face of the DCEU for as long as he’s around.

But given that Cruise is already 56, he wouldn’t have very long to stay in the role. That wouldn’t be a problem if the plan was to kill Jordan off, but not if you want to keep the character around to explore many of the possible storylines from the comics.

I do think the long-term plan is for John Stewart to become the focal Green Lantern in the DCEU, but I’d like to see a longer arc for Jordan than just one film (my Hal Jordan wish list will be posted soon). However, if Johns wants to kill off Hal Jordan, he’s not going to let Tom Cruise come in and tell him otherwise; there are certainly other actors who can take on the role.

I do think Cruise could work, but at the end of the day, I think WB goes in a different direction. A well-known but less expensive star who’s about ten, maybe twenty years younger.

Ryan Gosling, anyone?
